Andy Dufrene is a douche. Morgan Freeman is too wise and noble. Wise, noble people don't end up in prison. The bad-guy warden is one dimensional. Yeah, prison staff are not the brightest bulbs in the world, but nobody is that stupid to miss out on the hero's escape method all those years. And I don't like Stephen King in general. He apparently didn't do any research at all on how prisons operate, because there are a number of glaring errors. But he's Stephen King, and a lot of people will read his books and go see movies based on them, no matter how shitty. Good for him, I guess.

So typical that the Academy would love it.
The Academy likes well-done historical epics. That is why Gladiator and Braveheart won in those two years. I personally would have gone with Traffic and Apollo 13 but that's just me.

Pulp Fiction. Edit: I guess I don't "despise" it. But I just don't see why it is regarded as highly as it is. It's just a stupid movie.

What didn't you like about Memento? Just curious. I enjoyed it more than Nolan's other films

Not sure. Just didn't get into it. Probably had to do with the fact that everyone was saying it was the greatest movie there was, like they do with all of Nolan's films. I'm not a big Nolan fan. He's a good director, but very overrated. Maybe I should give Memento another try. It's been about ten years since I've watched it. I could go on for pages about what's wrong with Donnie Darko.

I saw it without knowing shite about it, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Donnie Darko either. You should give Memento another chance though.

Why compare Nolan to a director who himself was overrated? I will never go so far to say that Nolan is a revolutionary filmmaker. He's a good one though, one of the better "mainstream" directors working today. And you can't deny the impact he has had on the summer movie season. He has revolutionized the summer popcorn movie by making them more than just mindless action. That's not revolutionary by any stretch of the imagination, but you can't deny he has had an impact on intelligence level of films that come out during that time of year.

I agree with this statement. The only Kubrick film I really liked was Full Metal Jacket. And then, I only liked the first half. Clockwork Orange was okay. 2001 was boring as all hell.

And people love Nolan. I am a less than radical Nolanite. I see that he makes good films though I will never go so far as to say that he is a revolutionary film director because, at least at this point in his career, he is not.

I have seen Paths of War, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. I would say that only two of those have any replay value for me. He made good films but they aren't the masterpieces that everyone says they are.

I accidentally left it off. I edited accordingly. The film was good but, like most Kubrick movies, it has little to no replay value for me.
