While the songs are great for the most part, and Duane Allman was a virtuoso, there is no coherence to the music or unifying theme. Thus, it is just a damn good album.

Of course there isn't. It's an anthology there's no way to have an underlying theme but it is a collection of the best work that the greatest guitarist of all time ever created. Therefore, at least in my opinion, it surpasses "good".
