I was kinda hoping for Matthew Vaughn or Brad Bird but this is a solid choice. Can't wait to see what he does with the franchise

Would Abrams take a position where he was creatively hamstrung? Guy seems to have enough cred at this point that he wouldn't be the puppet of the producers. Maybe Vaughn or Bird would have been candidates more in that line, but Abrams seems like he wouldn't sign up for that gig unless he had significant control.
Personally, I'm meh on the hire. Considering the names speculated, and the franchise itself, they couldn't have done any worse. They could have done better though.

You say that like it's a bad thing. If any movie should be a studio film, it's Star Wars. I don't want a "risky" Star Wars. I want a mass entertainment that is made by professionals and tells a compelling story.

i like Abrams as the director.

So what do we have to look forward to, a bunch of plot lines that wander off and never get answered? Can we get another crazed polar bear in the opening scene that never gets revisited?
JJ is the modern day Guligan's Island. His charecters will never get off the island or out of the trouble. He knows to never answer the questions to the cool stuff because then you will stop watching. He/It's one big tease.
