RAM shouldnt effect the computer not spinning fans or anything. the board should accept power and then provide an error code (beeps or lcd readout) if no RAM is detected.
eta: dimm slots are different for each board. some want 1 and 3, some 1 and 2, some 2 and 4, and so forth.

Shouldn't but I'd reduce everything down to bare minimum anyway and then add stuff.
