Question, though:
If he was trying to kick the ball and said that he did kick the ball (and not the boy)...what is he apologizing for?

Even if he had of only kicked the ball it was still not something he should be doing. He's just apologizing to his teammates putting himself into a position to get sent off and to appease the FA and all the people who will get up in arms over it.
