It is the fairest way to do it.

If the team with the weakest schedule ties the team with the best schedule, its obvious which team is worse. Therefore you let them ahead.

Yep, which really pissed me off watching them lose. I remember reading before the game the Saints would be picking behind them turds no matter what so at least they could've won and finished .500

Ahh yes because the NFL is where its decided on the field as to who the better team is unlike college..
