Here's my two cents.
It seems the staff is assuming we don't get Willis and goodman. Ok so they start shooting for spears and maybe carter... I'm not buying in on either. I mean lets face it, how many low star no names can end up like a Jacob Hester?.. Not many. It seems like they are just trying to fill spots at this point. Would u rather have the pen spot to count back for next year or fill every spot you have for 2013? I myself would not waste my time on carter, I got two TE this yr and Washington next year. Spears is a project, and though I usually trust our coaches' projects, I'm concerned about trying this one so late in the game. I don't want to knock on the guys' offer list, but how come no one else wants to gamble on him? If he'd taking Leslie's place that's fine but if not, I don't like it.

It just kinda seems Ike we are filling spots with some in state guys that aren't SEC championship caliber... And if I'm wrong ill be the first to eat crow. I just think if RN, Willis, and goodman don't workout, I don't want to scrounge up in state last minute guys that no one has heard of just to fill spots.

What makes some of yall think that the coaching staff has just "given up" on some of these guys? Cuz we go sign a guy (Spears) who is 6'3 190 has 1100 yards receiving in his first year playing ball with over a 17 yard average and 11 TD's? Chill out...Goodman and multiple others are scheduled to visit next weekend and Nkemdiche the following one. Whether or not they come or not is on them but the coaches aren't giving up and settling for "no names"!

Spears is low profile because he is a late bloomer. He started playing football during his junior year and was extremely raw because he was only a basketball player before he gave football a try. Going from almost nothing to over 1k yards and double digit TD's in one season means he has immense natural talent. Guys who have big offer sheets are typically the ones who have been known for a while and have been evaluated by big schools from the time they enter high school. Morris Claiborne was a 3-star WR/QB in high school.

Take your two cents and shove them up your arse. Fortunately for Cethan Carter, who is a great kid by the way, he wont have to worry about LSU "wasting their time" on him.

Spears is a project

I'm a little worried about our history with WR projects. Armand Williams at least held an offer from Bobby Petrino. I was excited about the kid's size and athleticism. If he can't play WR, why hasn't he played safety, or receiving TE?

I do think Spears is a late bloomer and definitely has a lot of upside (but I thought that about Williams). I can't think of a comparable player, but these are changing time.

I agree on Carter. I think we make room for Willis (and RN, unlikely as it is) if he decides on us, but it is looking more and more likely he will go elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure this is the calculus, though, objectively, it looks like a big step down. I'm not sure the recruiting services will increase their valuation of Spears based on an LSU offer in the same way they would if he committed to USCw, Bama or Notre Dame - ultimately I don't care as long as he develops into a starter and becomes a solid player.
