A CMP sales office is in Anniston. If you can find a way to get into one of the supported affiliations you could drive up there and pick one up

I live pretty close to there what is involved in buying one from them? Is it just a matter of going in and picking one out and paying for it?

Can also go their website here, pick out what grade you want and order it. No FFL needed, ships directly to your house.

Here's most of what you need to know.

LINK

If you meet the criteria then it pretty much is a matter of walking in, picking one out, fill out a little paperwork, pay for it, then walk out the door. I was in and out in about 20 - 30 minutes but I knew what I was looking for but there is quite a bit to look at if you don't mind talking the time.

Edit: Ordering online and having it shipped will save you some tax money which can be substantial depending on the rifle. The downside to this is that you are basically leaving it up to the staff to select the rifle in the grade you order. The website gives you a very general idea of what you'll get but there are variations in terms of the metal finish, throat, and muzzle wear. Sometimes significant. My rifle is one of the "specials" with an even 1/2 for the muzzle/throat wear but many were 1/2+ or 1+/2+ and one I saw was a 1/3. Most were tightly fitted with the furniture but some were loose and would rattle. If you care about that kind of stuff then you might want to pay a bit more to pick it out in person if you can.
