Hornets sit at the 5 spot (in terms of draft odds) in the NBA standings.

New Orleans 13-26
Phoenix 13-27
Cleveland 10-31
Charlotte 9-29
Washington 7-29

This isn't a "hope we tank" thread or anything. Just wanted to point out where we currently sit after our recent push with Gordon back.

The records of the teams ahead of us in the standings are far more relevant to our draft.

8th seed doesn't seem as for now. I don't think they get it.

I just don't see the hornets making the playoffs

Part of me thinks it's a waste to be a middle of the pack team with nothing to show for it(playoff..high draft pick..).

At least the experience and development would be ahead of schedule

Nothing wasted by learning how to play together and developing some chemistry.

Yeh I touched on that at the end

Fans would be more optimistic heading into next season too

Getting another high draft pick would be great, but like you just said, the positives outweigh the current draft prospects.

This team is close. They just need to develop and add one more big piece.

Option 1
Play slightly under .500 ball with Gordon
Finish with wins in the low 30's like 31-51
Get the 7-8 pick

Option 2
Play around .650 ball with Gordon
Finish around .500 like 40-42
Get the 11-14 pick

With Option 2 it will be much easier for Demps to sell free agents "Once we got fully healthy we played well enough to be a 5-6 seed, you'd make us a 1-4 seed!" So the question is do we want better FAs or a better draft pick? I vote for FAs considering our cap space and that anyone we pick even at 7 will likely be a project like Rivers. Not to mention that Option 1 suggests our core isn't as good as we need it to be. I just can't see the positive in losing this season.

I think we are even closer than it seems to being a really good team. Looking at Hollingers Power Rankings, we have had the hardest schedule in the NBA by a pretty large margin.

I agree with everything you said. The draft is weak, so a high pick isn't even a sure thing. However, we definitely have space for free agents. We need to prove we're not a dumpster fire to have any hope of attracting good players.

I'd like to see the Hornets trade the pick for an experienced young player. I don't see many guys on the FA list that could come to the Hornets and be what they need (except J Smith)

Someone that can help right away and not cost too much money wise. Somewhere in the range of 6-9 million a year or so.

Greivis' contract is up after next year (RFA) and we will need to re-sign him. So signing a max-guy like Smith could hurt the chances of the Hornets bringing back Greivis

I'm pretty sure Greivis is signed through 2014-2015.

ETA - nevermind, I see that the $3.2 is the qualifying offer.

we are within 4 games of 7 different teams in the East and West if anyone was keeping track...very interesting that winning a few more games (and of course those teams losing) and our draft spot jumps from 5 to 12

At picks 5-12, wherever we end up, Porter and Poythress should be there if we don't sign a 3 in FA. If not, Burke please.

My thoughts exactly. I expect us to finish decently strong, but more like 25-18.
If we don't get one of the top SFs in the draft, I would love Burke to strengthen our guard rotation.
