None of this makes sense. Having worked in media, this is what is supposed to be SOP. News producer at ESPN hears of this story, gets initial info from ND SID. He/she then assembles his crew, telling one, get me B-roll of Stanford U from their SID, any footage of her playing her sport, get a hold of their registrar, find out which classes she attended find/pay a classmate, teammate, roommate, to give us background. Turns to the second one, get B-roll and footage of hospital and attending doctors and nurses. Third one, look up CA Dept of Corps and find out address of where her family business is so we can get even more B-roll. Fourth guy, find out what you can of her working with kids in New Zealand, after all, Manti said that she worked with them in that country.

Within hours, not days, not weeks, every one of these people would have come back and said, "Big Boss Man, we can find nothing, zilch, nada, of this woman." News producer would have then contacted ND SID and said that there must be a misunderstanding, talk to Manti again just to make sure we have the facts straight.

That is what always happens, that is why it's called SOP, because that is what you always do. If SOP had been followed, none of this would have occurred. Obviously, SOP wasn't followed, that is why this occurred. The fault for all this lies with ESPN/NBC/ND. They are supposed to be the gatekeepers to keep lies from going out over THEIR audio/video frequencies and under the ND brand. Otherwise, what they're attempting to say is that a couple of 22 yo's with no money or resources, but some twitter accounts, were able to dupe some of the biggest media conglomerates in the world. If so, then those idiots have no business being in business. But they're not idiots, so they knew exactly what was going on.
