Ive played video games since I was 5.
I remember that moment in my early childhood days of when i ran around my neighborhood trying to jump on birds in turtle shells and breaking my hands trying to jump punch my parents' brick arch way in front of the house...
The idea of hanging thier blame hat on the rack of a peice of $60 digital media while worse comes on basic cable is depressing.
I grew up watching football, since I was 5 - maybe younger - and have played football games since they were on the original nintendo and never once became so torn between video game and reality that I ran out and tried to tackle someone to "relive the game experience"...but I guess thats a strawman.

I played Chivalry last night. I really had the urge to dress up in armor and have a sword fight this morning.

quote:Good point, but let me play devil's advocate. You don't control a character on basic cable. There is the only difference--the sense that you are the character.

I agree with you. I have been playing shooters and sports games since I was a kid. I don't own a gun and I have never felt the need to open fire on children or moviegoers.

Even with the proliferation of digital games in our culture, people still create arbitrary categories for them. I play Angry Birds, so I'm a "casual gamer". But there's something wrong with those other gamers over there playing with pixelated doomsday weapons!
Eventually, the media will become as ingrained and unquestioned as everything else that fills our free time. I would say that the people who don't understand "gamers" are the ones who lack a lucid connection to reality. Playing games is not a mysterious concept.

I think you may be onto something.
I always wondered why I get the urge to smash monkeys and barrels with hammers when I play Donkey Kong.
