It is as if they're making this change solely for the ignorant assholes who scream "BALK!!!" after this play all the time.

This is simply not true. In what way is this an advantage for the offense?
You are still allowed to fake a pickoff to second or third. A pitcher could still perform a pick-off to third by lifting his leg looking like he would be delivering it to the plate and if the baserunner took off too soon the infielders would yell "runner" and the pitcher could still turn and throw the ball to second.
