I have a server where I can host files and are accessible. I share a lot of things - books, movies, music - this way.

I had a friend that did this for a long time. It was actually just an FTP, but it was awesome.

I can do http downloads which is nice for newbs, but I can only post via FTP.

I am happy to host any mix tapes the music board comes up with. I got a ton of space and don't do much in terms of my monthly bandwidth cap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you have to have dropbox to actually download something from it, right?

I get your point about making mix cd's and mix tapes. It is pretty awesome going back to some of mine that I've made. It's like getting in a time machine. You can technically still do this by making a playlist and sharing / saving it, but it may not have the same nostalgic effect as a physical CD or tape.

quote:

capacity
speed

Those are the two most obvious reasons. I'll use dropbox or spotify if I'm sending something to a friend in Chicago, but it's way easier and faster for me to drag and drop to a thumb drive and physically hand it to a friend. Flash drives don't expire, either.

Capacity and speed? Really? How is that easier than creating a playlist or highlighting and album on spotify, and sharing with a friend? I assume you don't have thumb drives full of random music on you at all times...

so cool guy do you buy a flashdrive and then just give them the drive?
Wasn't trolling

And yes... they are cheap(1gb) Our networking supplier usually gives us some free... I personally have plenty going around.

I also don't run around actively sharing music all the time. I'm not so narcissistic that I believe everyone I know on Spotify is sitting there waiting for me to post my next suggestion. However, I know a lot of people from a lot of music channels and they sometimes ask about specific artists that I've mentioned in conversation. I can then go home, grab 5 albums from that artist and paste at once to a flash drive. It won't take 5 hours for the file to upload and they won't have to dick around with downloads. I can just hand them the flash drive the next time I see them.

Also, not all music that I have on my hard drive is on Spotify.

You do know that you can choose who to share your music with on Spotify? You don't have to send a blast to all your facebook / spotify friends about how awesome you think some album or band is.

Right, which is why dropbox is useful for stuff like that. How is downloading something more inconvenient than having to deal with a physical flash drive? I don't mean to give you a hard time, but it just seems so backwards to me. You actually have to physically go home, and put songs on a flash drive, then find the person and give it to them. If both of you have spotify, you could actually send them the albums from your phone w/o even going home.

If you just like the act of giving something physical, then that is a whole different thing, and that makes sense.

Again, speed and capacity.

You're over-thinking this. My life does not revolve around sharing my music. Like I said, not that narcissistic. I go home, on average, daily. It's not like I'm going out of my way to get to my computer.

Sure, in some highly compressed iteration.

Ok I think I understand that you mean data transfer speed when you were saying "speed." But if we are talking about just the amount of time and effort that goes into using physical media, I don't see how sending somebody a link to download is less convenient, unless you are sending 10GB of data, which may be true.

Are you implying that I am narcissistic and that my life revolves around sharing music? I actually rarely share music because I'm somewhat insecure about what other people will think of it and how it reflects on me. But when I do share music, I go with Spotify or sending somebody a link. The frequency of sharing shouldn't really be relevant to convenience.

If it's for a chick, take the time to burn a CD and make a label for it. They'll appreciate the gesture.

Well, I'm an album person, so I don't typically send someone "the hits." I'm more than likely going to send them several albums and a short description of them and what the other person may enjoy from them. Then, if they like it, they already have the album.

Not you in particular. I just find that a lot of people overshare, which is narcissistic. I don't go out trying to convince the world of good music. Most of my friends know that I tend to explore more than they do and they hear new music around me. If they ask me about it, I can easily bring them a cornucopia the next time I see them. It's easy enough to leave a flash drive in the door of my car.

Well, I wouldn't go that far. That's just how I roll. You can always just create a mix "tape" of MP3s and zip them to send.

I agree 100%! I wish I had an arsenal of flash drives like you do, haha.

I'm usually given about 4 a year, so it makes it easy. I mean, I also post a fair amount of videos to facebook, but most of the time it's just obscure remixes or live videos that other fans of that band will enjoy.
