Yeah, I don't really think that Hannibal Lector (at least from Silence of the Lambs), is a villain. He has a villainous nature to be sure, but he's not the antagonist of the story.

sounds like you are the same page as I am. We had a discussion on here about Michael Corleone. IMO, all villains are antagonists, but not all antigonists are villains. and not all protagonists are heros.

Going to have to do a Long Detailed Posts about Expectatons for this one.

Micheal Corleone is Not a Hero. I want it to have a nice "classic hero" feel.

I think we could do one list for pre 1950

I'll take Pre-1940s if we do that.

The 1950s were awesome, they deserve a list.

How about just Best Movie Characters instead of Heroes and Villains? Every memorable character is typically a protagonist or antagonist anyway or are we talking a separate heroes list and a separate villains list?

I agree, but he is the protagonist and imo that means he is not a villain, even though he is evil. See we have a good discussion already

Yeah, 50's should get it's own list, a great decade, though no way could i stick to the 1 film per director standard.

20's, 30's and 40's could be 1 list imo.

Sadly Yes, but 30s deserve their own list as well.

With that said.

Off topic...
We need Writers!!

And more votes for Ballot size.

I'd beg to differ. The most memorable characters are the ones that sway between good and evil and make it difficult to say if they're the hero or the villain.

False. There's a reason classic stories (and even mythology) are remembered to this day. It has nothing to do with cannon and everything to do with the motivation and passion to have a stance and stick to it. There is a little interesting or memorable about someone who can't make up their mind.

I'm not saying they don't make it up in the end. Just internal debate in the middle of the story. Darth Vader defeats the Emperor in the end, but I think he's still in most people's mind a villain. A lot of people are hesitant to put Gollum on a villain list because of how much he goes back and forth, before becoming fully villainous at the end.

And this is what that voting might turn into. I like the idea but I can see someone causing a riot over the aforementioned Michael being put on a Hero/Villain list and somebody else disagreeing.

Anywho, yeah a ballot of 50 for the top 200 should be good. And if you need more writers I can do it although I am typically not as eloquent as you sly dogs.

I think it would be a good point/counter point discussion.

And Counter point the Godfather. (we all know that's going to be in the top 5.)

That's pretty much a declaration of war.
