Why even bother trading or cutting Alex Smith?

It wont be about money owed considering his contract is fairly cap friendly.
You arent going to even consider trading him or allowing him to go to a Divisional rival (Cards). You arent going to want him gong to the NFC at all if you can help it.
You wont get a good value player unless you value picks from Jacksonville, NYJ,KC and that means they have to like Smith in their system more than the kid they want to draft.
The one thing is you need something for him before you get nothing because his contract is over.(3yrs)
More importantly.... Scott Tolzien is your #3 QB. An undrafted free agent signed from SD. Not someone Id want the reins going to should Kaep go down.
Alex would be the best back-up QB in the league. He is the consumate profesional and wouldnt make many waves holding a clipboard for a couple seasons until you figure out the backup future.
pros vs cons? DGAF?

He wants to start.

All QB's want to start bro. Its in any NFL players DNA. Rogers was a backup and was a stud.....holding a clipboard.
Steve Young is a perfect example although Kaep isnt the same as sitting behind Montana...obviously

he should have good trade value with that cap friendly contract that's why
if you won't play him, get something back for him

But he hadn't started yet.
Bear in mind Smith is a QB that quarterbacked a team to the NFC Championship game one year ago. Dude will not be content in SF holding the clipboard behind a young Kaepernick.

Because Harbaugh has all but explicitly spelled out the fact that he doesn't want Alex Smith quarterbacking his team.

Because the NFL has a salary cap, and his contract could be used for on another player or two? I believe his contract next year is like 8.5 million. That's too much to pay someone to sit on the sideline.

Something back for him
Well either a Pick or another QB is about all this team needs. You can demand a good value with him but whats out there?

Even with his contract in place they arent over the cap and they resigned most of the guys they wanted. 8 million doesnt go as far as it used to anymore FWIW

Clearly they don't think too highly of him, why would they care abt him going elsewhere?

Might as well trade him to the Cardinals. Playing behind that offensive line, his fate will follow that of Kolb and Skelton.

Traditionally you never trade a player, especially a talented player, to your competitor. Its that way in almost all sports.

I obviously don't have his stats, but wasn't he terrible before Jim Harbaugh took over. I know he had alot of OC's, but he wasn't really all that productive was he? Or was it just the team was that bad? I think the way they handled the change was kinda crappy. To lose your spot while your injured is sort of a no no in the NFL. I know the Brady lovers will come in full force over that comment, but Smith shouldn't have lost his job imo.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm aware teams do this in every sport. I just think SF knows Smith better than anyone and if he isn't going to be there QB, I'm not sure why they would be worried about him going to ARI or STL.

Why would he go to STL? Don't they have a franchise QB in Sam Bradford?

I was just tossing out teams in the west, ARI would obviously be the team looking to sign him.
