Unless you have kids in the house, there is no reason to leave your weapon unloaded. When chambering a round, you risk the chance of a malfunction and giving up your position to the perp. It's best to have her ready to roll.
Besides that, I can't critique your story anymore than that. I don't know what I would do and simply hope I would make the right decisions. Glad it turned out alright for you.
Fortunately I've never had to draw before. But there have been times when I was happy to be carrying due to not trusting my surroundings.

the poster had a burglar in his house. He had burglar run off and never was in any jeopardy. I would say he handled it just fine.
The thing I want in an altercation is space, however that is achieved that is all I care about.
