you can do that no problem. just kill off the windows installation on the old HDD and instead just keep the files. best way to do that is move the files you want to keep onto a flash drive temporarily, format the HDD, and then move the files back.
eta: if you have the extra $50 then definitely upgrade the cpu to the 3570k

I really don't have anything important on this computer. I guess my question would be what are the benefits of having both other than protecting yourself in a crash? Since I don't do anything to heavy maybe just the SSD?

the benefits of the SSD is that it is lighting fast compared to a standard HDD and lasts longer since it has no moving parts.
the cons are that they are expensive, roughly $0.80 per GB. thats why most people buy a small SSD for the OS and a large HDD for their storage.
if you have no storage needs, just get the SSD. if you have the extra cash, get a 180GB or 240GB model.

If all you do is put the os on the ssd then is there any gaming performance or just boot up and what not?

your performance improvements will generally just be on whatever is installed on the SSD.
if games are on the HDD, you wouldnt notice anything since most of the file req's take place in memory anyhow.
my steam folder is on a 5400 rpm green HDD and there is no performance issues even with that.

How much longer do you think you can get by on that?

And since that mobo goes up to 32gb of RAM I might as well go all the way. HOw is this RAM G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series

The hdd will be fine for steam forever basically. It has to do with how steam delivers the content.
Do not get 32gb of ram. You'll never use more than 16, ever.

Case: Xigmatek Asgard Pro $50
PSU: Cooler Master 500w $40
Optical: Asus DVD Burner $20
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD $100
CPU:i5 3570k $230
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Pro3 $90
Memory: G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 16GB $85
The Sapphire just went out of stock so I am out on that one for now. This puts me at $615

why are you looking at going back to the 5xx series? if you are doing a new build, we should use 6xx gtx's or 7xxx radeons.
also, if you get a card better than the original one, it will require a PSU upgrade.

I decided to cut back on the video card and put more in to my SSD. I ended up going with a Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch. I can always upgrade the video card. I will only play a few games on my PC and the SSD can help with the performance of what I use my PC for every day. As far as the PCU I am upgrading to a 600w Thermaltake. Net savings was over $100 and I put my money in the parts that I will use the most.
