What pisses me off is that th emovie studios essentially tell the Oscar committees what movies to look for by the timing of their release. It's like they don't even start watching movies until November. I haven't looked this year, (I have in years passed) but I'd bet at least 2/3rds of nominations for actor, actress, picture, director, score and supporting cast were released November and later.

Its Oscar season! Are these guys that old they cant remember movies early in the year?

My favorite Leo role is Cath Me if You Can. He carried that movie.

Love that movie. On a related note; Christopher Walken had like 15 minutes screen time and got a Supporting Actor nomination

I think Leo is a good actor, even better than Denzel who I'd also consider a generally good actor. Django was a massive step in the right direction for Leo as he ages. He could become a great actor if he continues doing more work like that. But Pitt is a world class actor IMO. Leo ain't there yet. He still goes into that overacting Leo mode where he chews up the scenery. He's gotten better at that gradually since his early years when it was occasionally unbearable.

Love the Oscars.

It's an institution, just like the Heisman.

Sure they don't always get it right, and the broadcast itself is hit or miss, but it's the frickING OSCARS. If nothing else, it's just a cool stroll down memory lane for cinephiles from the year before. It's nostalgia if nothing else, and you can't argue that most of the films nominated are worth some praise.

I've watched them every year since I can remember and always will.

This is pretty much my attitude. I don't get too bogged down in who wins or loses. I do care, but not enough to be outraged. This is a body that thought Dances with Wolves was better than GoodFellas, after all.

But it's a good barometer of Hollywood. It's the industry awards for American mainstream movies. It does a good job of taking the pulse of Hollywood. It's not as befuddling as the Grammys, which truly are meaningless. It's a cool award, but I don't think anyone would take you seriously if you argued a movie isn't good because it didn't win an Oscar.

But I do find the backlash to be patently ridiculous. I actually prefer when the Oscars are more over the top. It's Hollywood, for godsakes.

Basketball diaries and titanic. Less so but still present in more recent movies like gangs and blood diamond IMO. In his defense, he usually picks movies where throwing in a little Leo works. But that's my point. He has a base movie personality he works around generally.

But it's unfair for me to say pitt's better for that reason cuz he has a base screen personality he works off. Every really famous actor does. That's why they're famous. People like their character. Maybe I just don't like Leo's character as much as some other stars.

If the Oscars weren't so stuck up its own arse I would enjoy it more. I pay attention to who wins and loses and have debated what I think to be robberies from the past.

I would like to see them add a few more awards that can recognize some really good work that normally goes ignored.

Since they dont even consider comedies really, how about a best comedic movie award?

And the one I really want to see which I am shocked doesnt exist is an Oscar for Best Scene. While the movies didn't win Best Picture, I for one believe that directors deserve awards for such scenes as the D-Day from Saving Private Ryan and the opening scene in Inglorious Bastards. This could be a way for the academy to still be stuck up its own arse as they ignore these violent movies for Best Picture and still reward the directors for some outstanding work

I guess this is my thing. Why is it considered a good pulse when its so hit or miss? Especially as a whole.

I guess its getting worse but throughout time theyve shown they dont know what films hold up and what are the best of the year. Was it not obvious that Hitchcock was a genius at the time? Vertigo wasnt even nominated for best picture Instead you got Gigi, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Auntie Mame, Separate Tables, The Defiant Ones.

Apparently Hoop Dreams was invisible because it didnt even get a best documentary nomination. Instead you got Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision, Complaints of a Dutiful Daughter, D-Day Remembered, Freedom on My Mind, A Great Day in Harlem.

Steven Speilberg for Jaws? Who?

2001: A Space Odessey? CLEARLY, Oliver!, Funny Girl, The Lion in Winter, Rachel, Rachel, Romeo and Juliet are better.

God forbid a popcorn movie like The Dark Knight get nominated. Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Reader are what people are going to remember.

I know its east I guess to pick them apart like I do, but its every single year. Not just who wins, but even whats nominated, in the big categories. Stuff that a lot of times is pretty clear to the public, but not to the Academy.

I thought it was a very realistic portrayel of nursing home workers and their efforts at preventing urinary incontinence.

Oscars are barely a step above the Peoples Choice or Nickolodeon Awards at this point.

This.

They are not committed to the art of film anymore, as seen in many of this years snubs (and the hundred of "winners" in the past 15 years).

So no, I don't care. They are generally a vehicle for a combination of critical, public, and feigned "off beat" opinion. You can tell that they do things "just to be different." Just like they nominate films that exist simply to win such awards *coughCrashcough*.

They really don't care anymore about "Film." The only awards left that they actually give based on artistic merit have been Cinematography and Score.
