re: Brees' stolen 2009 MVP

I'm convinced people are subconsciously looking for any excuse to just frick over Brees.

Not for his mouth (because this disrepect started before he became a regular soundbite in the news), but I think it's mainly because he doesn't have a cannon or ideal height, so there's a built-in measurables bias that began since the draft.

In addition, they just don't want to give him top honors because some think it is all system driven. I remember Cowherd put #8 Carson Palmer over #10 Brees before the 2009 season because "if you put Carson with Sean Payton, his numbers would be astronomical...One of the best arms in the leaugue!"

So one year they'll say "Oh, Manning won more games than Brees". The next year, it's "Rodgers had less INT's & a better YPA than Brees". One year they'll base it on games won, the next they'll base it on stats, whichever suits their subconscious bias-driven agenda. All the while, Brees is setting stat records AND makes it further or just as far as the MVP winners did in the playoffs.

To win the overall MVP, Brees will have to have the best record, most yards/TD's, highest YPA, and have the least amount of INT's. But then again, that's probably when they'll give it to somebody like RG3 for having "the most rushing yards ever by a QB" or some shite.

The reasons voters voted for Manning was because he was undefeated under center. They were 14-0 and leading the jets at halftime when manning was pulled. Colts went on to lose and lost their last game when manning didnt play.

Brees lost to cowboys and bucs in week 15 and 16. That sealed manning's MVP. It sucks, but I'm guessing that swayed the voters and put the nail in coffin on Brees over manning.

I think he should have won last yr. I would have been fine with co Mvps last yr. He shouldn't have not won last yr, that's for sure. I think you can easily argue he deserved last yr's mvp more than he did 2009.

I think Rogers deserved it last year.

Nothing in his stats from 2009 lead to a MVP year. Too many interceptions, too big of a QB rating gap, and Brees actually set a 20 year old NFL record that year

re: Brees' stolen 2009 MVP

Personally, the only stats that matter to me when I look at qb's is:

1.Ints
2.TD's
3.Completion % (this is drews flashiest stat column imo)
4.Attempts
5.Sacks

in that order

I don't really even consider yards because that stat is so loosely translated to success and more about the run/pass ratio of the team. It is much more possible for a team to have 500 yds and lose, than a team with 5 ints or 0 td's thrown to win. Yds is not a very strong indicator of success.

You guys also seem to be bringing career numbers into this discussion which imo doesn't and shouldn't have anything to do with the mvp vote for a certain yr.

I think the only year anyone has an argument for drew brees getting mvp is the superbowl year. It could have gone either way.

I'm not too offended by manning getting it that year either. If you take off your stat colored glasses and realize that manning was basically running the offense himself that year, you cant really argue that he didn't deserve it. Brees also deserved it but alas there is only one award and I guarantee the majority of the nation found the selection they made more acceptable.

Then again, whether or not Brees gets individual awards matters very little to me. As long as he's winning games, I'm satisfied with the compensation hes getting, all 100 mill of it.

Rodgers had the clear cut better season in 11

Brees had the clear cut best season in 09

The first, drew has a small case, the second drew got fricked hard

Most MVP polls that season had Manning and Brees in a dead even race until week 15 when both had nationally televised games. Manning threw 4 TDs including a 65 yarder with 5 minutes left to win the game. Brees had a QB rating of 81 in a home loss to the Cowboys. I'm not condoning the logic behind it, but that week cost Brees the MVP.

Increasing the legacy of our once in a lifetime franchise quarterback is pretty important to me.

Definitely, but I hate how that game erased 13 prior weeks of Brees being the better QB. Bree's blew out the

Lions
Eagles
Bills
Undefeated giants
Patriots
TB

And put 46 on the fins after being down 24-3 with 3 seconds left in the first half. Not to mention the classic against the redskins.

Brees was the MVP that year hands down

What Brees did to the Patriots that season is one of the best QB performances I've seen. It was awesome watching Brady get pulled because they were taking such a massive arse kicking

Agreed. That alone should've been game over for the MVP race. The redskins game was incredible. It was like heisman moments in the NFL.

i don't understand your argument here. What is the problem with wanting both since one doesn't hurt the other at all

I'm not arguing against anything. You guys care about some individual players book shelves more than I do and I'm not going to change anyones mind because there's nothing to argue about here.

I care about the saints achievements as a team. You don't ever hear people comparing their team's mvp counts. I doubt it will ever come up again until hall of fame voting occurs and then never again outside of saints fans of course.

That's all I'm saying, a superbowl trophy means we (the saints, pre emptive defense of "what do you mean we") were the best and won. A mvp means that a particular player had a great season, good for them. It often times goes to guys who dont win the superbowl and at that point, it is just a consolation prize to me.

I'm not saying I don't want drew brees to win an mvp. I just don't really care when he doesn't get it because it doesn't implicate anything to me.

MVP should be decided after the SB, IMO. Not saying playoffs should be the end all to the decision, but when you have two players fairly close, the playoffs could provide a tiebreaker. The 2009 SB provided an obvious one.

all the talk was 4 time MVP. After the game no one gave a shite and no one thought he was really the MVP.

I think it should at least go through the end of the season. I think the voting is done by week 13. I.E. brees didn't get padded by the tampa and cowboys game.
