The "8.5" you mentioned is the loft. Fwiw, that's a very low loft for an amateur golfer. I have a 7 handicap and I play a 9.5 loft (Titleist 905R).

He's referring to the adjustable setting on his driver. Setting D1 is delofted 0.75 degrees and neutral. So, he's actually playing his driver at 7.75 degrees.

d-1 is the setup on the adjustable club.
I played a 7.5* 975J throughout high school and some college.
My handicap is roughly 4.5
I own a 975d, 975j, 909, and 910. None greater than 8.5*
