My old man shot at a buck Thursday evening and thought he missed. Long shot on a pipeline as the light was fading. I got there Friday evening and tried to go look for some sign on the pipeline and came up empty as well. Intended to walk out a few of the deer trails coming into the area Saturday but the rain pushed us out. My son noticed some buzzards dropping into the adjacent cutover this morning so we went back in and found the deer! A would be nice 8 point but the main beam broke off just past the G2 on the left side. Hated to lose the meat but at least we know the deer wasn't wounded out there and we got the horns back. Old man was relieved to know he could still shoot straight to. Shot was low behind the shoulder (clipped bottom of heart) but hit shoulder on opposite side and didn't exit so the deer didn't leave a blood trail. Only ran about 50 yards into the cutover.

I'm not trying to be a smartass here but if the deer only ran 50 yards, someone gave up WAY to quickly

Agreed but my dad is not in any shape to go tracking in the terrain that deer ran into (hands and knees cutover) and he honestly thought he had missed. The deer didn't act like it was hit and there was zero sign of a hit. By the time I was able to get there to help the meat wasn't gonna be any good anyway had I found it that evening. So at that point it was just a horn recovery search anyway at best once we made the effort of crawling into that briar jungle!

And they ate well! Amazing what they can do in a short amount of time! I'm sure the coyotes helped out some too!
