We overall had a very good defense. But like I'm sure you're all aware of, something changed during and after that last series of the Alabama game. Suddenly pass defense was a thing of the past and that was a trend that continued through the final 4 games of the season. It could be attributed to youth but it's concerning considering the amount of talent it looks like we'll lose to the draft.

Anyways, I totaled up the numbers and they're not pretty. The pass defense was bad and we did a poor job covering the primary target.

Moo State
351 total yards 17 points
Russell 26/38 295 1TD 1INT
Bumphis 9rec 140 1TD

Ole Miss
463 total yards 35 points
Wallace 15/35 310 2TD 3INT
Moncrief 6rec 161 2TD

Arkansas
462 total yards 13 points
Wilson 31/52 359 1TD 1INT
Hamilton 9 rec 98

Clemson
445 total yards 25 points
Boyd 36/50 346 2TD
Hopkins 13rec 191 2TD

TOTALS
1721 total yards/430 yards per game
90 points/23 points per game
1310 passing yards/328 passing yards per game
37 primary receiver receptions for 590 yards/9 rec 148 yards per game

Maybe because they had none of their goals to play for. Christ.

I knew it wasn't great, but those stats are a little alarming.

nice work. this sucks. I knew it was bad and I could have been fine not knowing how bad it really was.

Shouldn't the goal be to win each game, regardless of the games before or after? Maybe they're letting the fan base get in their heads and only think about championships. Would be sad if true.

The things that stood out to me was our corners still had good coverage, but they were more focused on covering the receiver than playing the ball.

To me that was the biggest difference from our corners the last few years. They are very young, and did a good job overall. I think the awareness and knowing when to start looking for the ball will come with time for them.

The defense is so fricked next year with all the upperclassmen leaving.

One of my thoughts was to attribute this to the growing pains of the Jalens. If that was the case, I hope they get a heck of a lot better by next season because they may not have as good of a pass rush to help them out.

They won them all except the last one that required a 4th and 16 conversion and questionable clock management by the HC.

So frustrating when a receiver gets to the back of the end zone on a route and the corner still has not tried locating the ball. The receiver can't go any further and he's looking towards the quarterback with wide eyes. HELLO, the ball is coming!!

I watched those games!!!!! I don't need to see these stats to tell me how bad our pass defense has been.

The secondary got burnt in NC game and has been terrible since then!!!

I think it was more the down years in coverage Tharold and Reid had, and Chief's insistence on having safeties cover WRs when the nickerl/ dime CBs blitz. the Jalens were fine in coverage given their experience level IMO.

we'll be ok.

Ya, I think the Jalens did a really good job frankly, considering the youth there. Sure there were a few mental mistakes, and as I said before their focus being more on sticking with the WR than looking for the ball.

But, they have the physical tools to stay with just about any WR in the country, and to be in a good position to make plays.

Will be interesting to see how our pass rush is next year, and how the young DBs grow after this year. Not to mention some of the freak atheletes coming in with the 2013 class.

When your offense ranks in the bottom quarter of all offenses all season then your defense has quite an uphill climb ahead of them IMO.

The offense simply must get better. If Les lets the bullshite pop warner offense continue with the likely drop off in defense next year, it could be a rough year.

Time on the field was def a factor, but it wasn't much better last year.

Imho, our db's last year were so good at finding the ball once it left the QBs hands, it was the reason we only had a handful of passes completed against us when the ball was in the air for more than 10-15 yards.

Our coverage is still there, just the young guys still needing to learn to play the ball... Can't remember the game or play, but I think I remember a pass interference call against one of the young DBs this year. It was one of those calls that wouldn't have been made if the DB was playing the ball, but because he hadn't tried to turn and look for the ball its a pass interference.

Not too worried about it though, I think we're gonna be perfectly fine. That D we had last year was just absurd in pass coverage.
