There is so much wrong with this situation. Many have already been addressed earlier.
1. Absolutely no reason for the kid to have a key to a plane he had no training in let alone the certs needed. (If the parents knew, then it is as much their fault as it is the owners for their son having keys to something he shouldn't have had)
2. One of the first things in becoming a new pilot is your need to be mature enough not to take any risks that can endanger you or anyone else. FOLLOW RULES! He sounded like he may have been a nice kid, but obviously was not anywhere near close enough in respecting his limits, rules or the threat he posed.
3. The mom is an idiot for saying it wasn't a joyride. She obviously has no clue what licenses or ratings mean in aviation and she was paying for the lessons. Everything he did was wrong. (and he knew it as he taxied out onto the runway). She should be thanking god he crashed into a swamp rather than someones house killing innocent people.

The plane's registration was cancelled via FAA 
When I was working on PPL, I took a ride with my CFI in a twin. He let me do a couple of engine outs and for someone not having any clue, the plane became a monster with only one engine. I have a feeling this is what happened here.

This is pretty sad though. I had a sergeant lose his wife and son during deployment. Waiting on the military to get him home on top of the loss broke him completely. Plus, the fact that his son was being a dumbass won't make it any easier on him.

Look, they were incredibly stupid and committed theft, but it is still a very sad situation. The ringleader, the pilot, obviously nagged at his buddies to join him on his adventure. He ensured him that he could fly the plane well. I mean, they were just trippin', like teenagers do, and trusted him and went on the plane!
The death is very sad, everyone makes mistakes. Just because they went and pulled this bull shite doesn't mean that it's a plus one for humanity; they were just teenagers who were all #yolo and shite. I dislike the lack of dignity on this thread for these three young boys. Sad day.
