I finally saw it last night and I loved it. As much as I loathed the additions to the Lord of the Rings (letting everyone know that Eowyn was the mystery soldier, the Warg attack on the way to Helms Deep, Theoden being possessed by Saruman, etc...) I really liked the additions to The Hobbit.

If you understand film as a medium (aside from animation, which could definitely pull that off), then you'll know that they basically had no choice but to do that.
