The Family Guy spoof is worth a watch.
It was a plot hole made larger by pointing to it. Just say it's the trash and leave it at that. Adding a discussion about it highlights the absurdity.

This. The command not to destroy it suggests that they a) had been blasting them out of the sky already, b) it is standard practice to do so while engaged with rebel forces, and c) they have scanning abilities that can detect life forms, but not droids.
I understand that they needed to refer back to it later to determine where the droids landed, but it just seems really unnecessary, and worthy of a Darth Vader force choke.
