On a scale of 1 to 254 with 1 being not a problem at all and 254 being you're a fricking idiot for even proposing this how bad of an idea is it to use regular non-offset scope rings on an AR with one of your rings being mounted to the top rail of your free float hand guard. Rail is not yet purchased so lets say on a rail in the $150 price range if that makes a difference.

i honestly dont think it's that big of a deal, as long as you have a robust barrel nut and several crossbolts

I wouldn't do it. Not for fear the rail would rotate during use, but because the picatinny rail on your hand guard is likely not the same as the rail on your upper. The tolerances for picatinny are not very tight, and vary between manufacturers. I see a lot of rails that sit a few thou below the upper's rail as well as a lot of varying widths between them. Plus you have to worry about it not being perfectly square to the face of the receiver. Also, if the rail is the clamp on style the strain or deformation could make it a PITA or impossible to square up. Any of the above could cause your scope to point off or introduce stress to the scope. It's possible it could work, but personally I'd just opt for the cantilever mount instead of the rings.
