i have looked a little and to be honest...i'm not very educated on all of the different types of guns. your suggestions would be much appreciated. It will be used mostly for protection at home and in my vehicle. my main problem with guns i have looked at is i am a south paw. the one that i have found that i like the most without having fired it is the springfield xd .40

again...any help would be greatly appreciated

In my haste to reply with Glock 19 to aggravate the rest of the OB, I overlooked the ambidextrous requirement.

I have never checked the other side of mine, but I'm pretty certain it is not ambidextrous.

Honestly man, you're gonna get responses all over the board, and most are what that person shoots. Springfield, Glock, Sig, Smith & Wesson, Ruger, etc are all great guns. Just go pick em all up and see what you're comfortable with.

Taurus Millennium Pro PT140 .40 S&W

This is my everyday carry and I love it because it has a full size grip but is more compact and thinner and can be concealed very easily. I conceal wearing t-shirts and never print. 10+1 rounds of .40 S&W will get you home safe.

This. I had a hard time deciding when I was trying to narrow it down until I went and held them. Then it was very easy.

Taurus Millennium Pro PT140 .40 S&W

Made the mistake of buying one a few years ago. Brought it to the range one time and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Might be the worst gun I've ever bought/shot

Better hope it fires.

I don't know why everyone is going crazy about ambidextrous controls, but I would get the S&W M&P if I were a lefty. Hell, I'm gonna get one anyway because it's better than a Glock 19.

The Springfield XD is a good gun but for a CC gun, it's extremely wide. It's is even wider than a Glock 19, and I consider that 2x4 to be too wide.

Go to the store and hold some. The best polymer full size/compact ones out there are:

Ruger SR
S&W M&P
Springfield XD
Glock (even though I don't like them you may)

But you should decide if you want to CC it or just have it for home defense. There's a big difference.

If you want one for both, get a compact. If you want home defense, get a full sized. And if it will be a dedicated carry gun, get a subcompact.

Thanks again. I went after work and looked a little. Saw the s&w,taurus, & xd. none of which where compact. also saw some glocks but am not sure if I should worry about them not having a safety. I do have a four year old. don't get me wrong. I plan on having it locked up and all.

eta. just looked at s&w m&p .40 compact and it's got the slide release on the right side. may have to go puty hand on one

why do you think I may not need an ambidextrous one bapple? is the s&w easy for a lefty to operate efficiently?
