I don't blame him for the 2008 season. I blame Pelini. He knew what he had in that senior laiden class and rode them to a head coaching job. He is the reason we lost the Arkansas game. The first string was worn out by the end of the season. If Pelini had gotten more of the younger players ready in 2007, we would have had more to work with in 2008.

You're going to get a range emotion on this subject. I'm going to try and be as factual as I can, and just say that he wasn't ready for his promotion to Co-DC.

I get what Miles was trying to do, maintain continuity on defense at a time when he was preparing for a BCS title game. Pelini got the Nebraska job after the season was over, and Miles chose to promote from within and concentrate his efforts on the BCSCG, rather than conduct a search for a new DC. It didn't work out.

LSU's defense in 2008 fell to 11th in the SEC, despite the fact that LSU returned a lot of the players from the second-ranked SEC defense in 2007 and all the defensive coaches save Pelini. In 2007 LSU gave up 19.6 ppg. In 2008, the Tiger defense gave up 25.9 ppg. Since Chavis became DC, we've never given up more than the 17.8 ppg in 2010. Take out 2010 and we've averaged about 16 ppg.

The main problems with the Co_DC's were that they tried to "min-max" on every play...I.E. get what they thought were the best players in for each down. The result was that LSU defenders were usually confused and out of position on every play.

After the 2008 season, Miles chose to clean house on defense. Rather than being fired, both Peveto and Mallory landed jobs at other schools.

As a position coach, Peveto is liked by his players, and brings a lot of passion and energy to his job. Your players will be motivated, no doubt.

Wish both BDP and UK luck with this.

lolwut

experienced players left in 08:

Tyson Jackson
RJF

Charles Alexander
Fave

guys who had seen some time (some had starts under their belts) and took on bigger roles:

Nevis
Harry
Perry Riley
Cutrera
Al Woods
Kelvin Sheppard
Chris Hawkins

now look at all that talent, and a good bit of it experienced, playing in the same scheme, and tell me they should have been that bad.
