Deer hunters - eating the heart

I must admit, I am not an avid hunter. Out of pure curiosity, why do deer hunters take a bite of the heart raw from the deer they just took?

But fried heart and liver is a camp staple

I think you may be confusing this with people eating a bite of the heart from the first yellowfin tuna they catch

I've seen and heard of people eating the heart raw.

I do love some fried heart and liver though.

I have seen people put blood on their face after their first kill but never heard of this...I would strongly advise against it

I edited my post to "taking a bite" instead of eating the whole thing. I assumed it was some sort of rite of passage redneck Southerners do (kidding on the last part ) ?

Man we just reach in there and tear that heart out and start gnawin on it like an apple. Just handing it around so everybody can get some. Here's a pic from the last time we did that.
