Archer is/was a pretty good DC and a great linebackers coach. He was too young (I always defend Archer by reminding people that he is 3 1/2 months older than Les Miles), the wrong man at the wrong time, however you want to explain it.

Also, Archer won more games in his first 2 years than Hallman won in 4, had a winning record in the SEC - just a number of things to make him much better than Hallman.

Correct. Archer was ultimately not a good coach, who was proven to be in over his head.

He doesn't, however, deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Curley, in a discussion of terrible coaches.

Archer was over his head, but between 1971-2001, LSU only won two SEC titles. One of those was by Mike Archer. Additionally, he was the head coach during a 10-1-1 year in 1987 (we didn't win the SEC that year), arguably the best year LSU had in that 30 year span. Things spiraled out of control, but he brought us to heights we had not achieved since the 60s, and would not achieve again until the Golden era of LSU Football.
