I disagree. It's more about: life as a "working man," love, and having a good time. Not so much killing people and robbing banks. It was called the outlaw movement because they were rebelling against the machine.

There's songs like that coming out of Nashville today. They don't sound exactly the same but it's the same message. Do you have to be poor and do cocaine to be real country fan? I'm not getting it other than music today is different just like it has changed over the years.
