Coach Vitt's Opening Statement:
quote:

"I just got done meeting with our football team. They are in film study now reviewing yesterday's film. What they've all taken away from this and what I've tried to point out today is that in the National Football League, you have to first keep from losing before you can ever win, because you have to be able to do the small things and the little things to be able to put yourself in a position to win, so when you go on the road and turn the ball over four times, that's not good. When you score a touchdown defensively like we did, that puts us in the 85 percentile of winning that game. On the next play when you have a special teams touchdown that now puts them in the 93rd percentile of winning the game. Yesterday for the first time since we've been here, they had 453 yards in hidden yards combined in the return game, penalty yards and yards from takeaways. You're talking 31 points with those 453 yards. Before we ever win a game we have to keep from losing. Right now we're not playing very smart. We're not playing very disciplined. It starts with me. I need to do a better job of making sure our football team understands the critical factors that go into winning on Sunday. We'll continue to do it. Are myself and them, disappointed? Certainly. Am I discouraged? No. We're going to do everything we can to be prepared this week."

I really like this guy. Easy to see why CSP keeps him around. He is a no nonsense dude.

He's an at best above average linebackers coach, maybe a pretty valuable assistant head coach, and a pretty poor at best head coach when it comes to scheming.

I like Vitt as a coach but on a team that is built for his strengths, defensively. This team is built around Brees and what SP has planned weekly to do with the offense. Complimentary defense and a dominant offense, tackle well with discipline, fly to the ball as quickly as possible and stick to the basics that everyone learns in peewee through college, and limit mistakes in every aspect of the game is what this team has leaned on in the past and Vitt is not built to be the head coach of a team of that demeanor. He would be a good Head Coach for a team like Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, or any team built around a stout defense and game managing offenses with a little bit of flash in certain offesnvie areas (Ray Rice, Frank Gore, Rapist Ben). The best thing that could happen to Vitt right now would be for Payton to come back and let Spags and Vitt only worry about the defense together. A little extra love and time from Vitt with the defense could only make it better.

I agree he is above average at LB coach. HE has done OK with sub-par talent here in NOLA, IMHO.

I also agree he seems to be a pretty valuable assistant head coach.

You think he has done a poor job scheming with CSP team and players? What scheme has been off? Offensive? Defensive? How much input into the offensive schemes should he have had with Drew, Pete and Arron in those meetings? SHould he override Spags in the defensive meetings?

Judging his schemeing ability off this year is doing him a disservice IMHO.

If he's not inputting and he's not overriding and he's made quite a few on field head coaching mistakes here and there some big some not big... then what the hell is he doing? Oh, he's the press conference champ and the team cheerleader. I'm not bagging on Vitt but we're clearly getting outcoached every week.

I disagree. The only game I admit that Vitt was outcoached was the DEN game. SF, ATL, and NYG wasnt being outcoached it was due to turnovers and field position.

So coaching has no effect on turnovers and field position?

he is a place holder untill CSP gets back. When we kicked the hell out of Atlanta he was awesome.........when they beat us, he was outcoached.

Maybe. Maybe he is not head coach material, maybe he is just a good no-nonsense LB coach and assistant head coach.

It absolutely does but that does not only fall back on Vitt, IMO that is more of a coordinator and position coache's fault than a head coach who is striclty making game decisions. If you grade Vitt on Head Coaching decisions this year he has not been out coached week to week, again I say the only glaring one is the Denver game.

Well, he isn't a head coach. He's an assistant head coach/ linebackers coach. So that makes sense.

glad to see everyone on the same page that Vitt has underperformed as a head coach and "makes sense"

I agree. He outperformed Kromer though definitely. I think he said he never wanted the position and has no interest in being a HC sometime in the offseason, but he took it because the team needed someone. PCM declined i think and giving it to Spags i think mightve made too much controversy because he is new, and CSP will be back, so they gave the job to Vitt just to hold it until CSP gets back.

Both Vitt and Kroemer were elevated beyond the level of their competence, I think that much is clear.
