I think people forget about him because: a.) He's from england, and that doesn't set well with a lot of american boxing fans. B.) He wasn't a polarizing figurehead in the public. He wasn't loud/obnoxious/boastful. He had a workman like style, show up, beat your arse, go home. Rinse repeat.

He also was in his prime when the heavyweight division was going down. Had he fought Holyfield and Tyson between 90 and 95 it would be different. But he fought them in 99 and 2000. All of the attention at the time was on De la Hoya, Trinidad, Jones Jr... etc
