I've bought several guns from Gunbroker through the years and have had smooth tranactions each time. I'm looking at a rifle that is listed by a pawn shop in Arizona. My question is this - is there anything stopping me from contacting the pawn shop and buying it directly from them?

I wouldn't think so.

Call them and ask about the gun w/o mentioning Gunbroker

There is nothing stopping you, but they may only deal thru GunBroker. And unless you live in AZ you are still going to have to deal with the FFL transfer and shipping.

And if the gun is already on gunbroker you will probably either have to wait until the auction period is over if you are not wanting to pay asking price or pay the buy it now price

They're asking for either a money order or cashier's check. That makes me somewhat reluctant as I basically have no recourse once I mail them the funds.

I would be leery of this for sure. It is a long road trip to go find someone's arse to kick to get your money back in Arizona.

This must be commonplace now? My last two buyers have sent me Postal Money Orders as payment, even though PayPal was listed as required.

Yeah I'm going to have to deal with shipping and a FFL here locally. The intersting thing is in the auction details it says that the item is for sale in their shop and the auction can be ended anytime. What I was hoping to do was contact them and buy it outright and pay via a credit card for me to have some type of recourse. I also hoped to get a cheaper price but we'll see....
