From a liability point of view, it makes sense. It is probably better that he not actually load that rifle because if would be a nightmare if maybe he loaded it up and forgot that it was loaded. It is probably best that that particular gun never be loaded so as to completely remove the possibility of something like that happening.

b/c its tradition that a real rifle is fired at the game. Dont even see the big deal with him hunting with it.

Except he is using the UNIVERSITY'S rifle, which exposes THE UNIVERSITY to any liability.

the mascot is also trained on how to use the weapon properly like any gun owner should. The University does this to cover their arse just in case something went wrong at a football or basket ball game. The real question is where did he find the right kind of ammo for that thing to put down a bear .

Doesn't matter how well trained he is. If something accidental happens, the school can and will get sued. Big time.

What a potential nightmare. He shoots a hunting buddy. "Who supplied you with the gun?" "Oh...that big public university down the road."

i know what your saying, was it a lack of good judgement by him yes. But the question about why is he issued a real rifle is b/c its tradition even if something could ever happen.

I think him hunting with it is badass. One of my pledge bros fathers was the mountaineer back in the day. I doubt he did anything as awesome

I don't give a shite either way. I personally would never shoot a tiny black bear out of a tree, but to each their own. If this is such a big deal, why does the school allow the musket/rifle/whatever to leave campus/football facility?

They're probably wondering that right now. Wouldn't be surprised if they wised-up and had it locked up on campus and the mascot can take it out that day for the game but then has to return it. Pretty crazy - legal liability-wise - they gave him a live working rifle which he apparently had carte blanche with on his personal time. Hell, schools do this with most school property or regular equipment - I doubt you can drive that University-owned campus tour golf cart home. Anything the school issues that has a danger for injuring others or themselves.

whatevs Biff, the real pussy was the jackass mascot treeing and shooting a cub. if you are going to be a real man when hunting go get a fully grown adult. that guy came off like the kind of shithead that shoots a deer eating at a feeder with an assault rifle and thinks he's a badass for it.
