I watched his entire story, but I didn't catch all of the speech after he was awarded. I missed the part where he said he was proud to be an American.

Speaking as perhaps the worst public speaker in every class I've ever taken, his speech was probably an oratory masterpiece compared to what I would have done.

But, it's a public venue and he should be open to critique like anyone else. I agree that people are digging WAY to much to try to be offended by what he said, and my post wasn't really a jab at him. It was directed at this general idea that we have to be proud of things like ethnicity, country of origin, etc.
