.270 is a long action so you would not want to change it to .308. You'd want to stay with long rounds not that you couldn't do it. Like he said there's a lot you can do with it, but unless you just love getting shite stomped by big magnums, the most accurate rounds are in short actions. Which is the main reason I wouldn't bother spending a lot of money on this one as a long range rifle. Make it where you can take that 400 yard shot consistently. By then you'll have learned enough to know what you really want if you're going to step out past that and what it's going to cost. Which is a lot.

Not to mention 400 yards is reasonable for long range hunting so you actually could get into terminal ballistics. One other thing, ANY serious accuracy shooting is going to require you to be hand loading. And be very good at it. It's as important as the rifle if not more so.
