An earthquake like the Madrid quake in the 1800's.
A big hurricane.
No water coming downstream wouldn't reverse the flow, but would allow saltwater to back upstream a ways.

If saltwater back upstream, isnt that the same as reversing the flow. It stops going one direction and goes the other.
