Say you challenge a spot and the ball moves forward a few inches but is still not enough for the 1st down, you still "won" the challenge, right?

don't believe so, think you are only allowed to challenge whether spots are first downs, touchdows etc not something trivial like 1 yard further forward but short of the 1st down.

Yes. I believe as long as you challenge the spot of the ball, and the original play it overturned and they change the spot of the ball, it is deemed a successful challenge.
