When UConn got invited to the Fiesta Bowl, they had such a hard time getting their fans to by tickets that the A.D. looked into having another team take their spot and Randy Edsell was doing commercials begging fans to make the trip.

They did lose money on THE GAME. Yes, they made it up in the end, but they did, apparently, lose money on that one game.
But unlike UConn, Northern Illinois isn't going to have the benefit of an almost $4 million conference bowl share to offset those losses. NIU is going to lose a significant amount of money going to this game

I love the bowls, but trying to regulate them and not letting them just invite who they want is making them irrelevant and crappy.
what do you mean "regulate"? since when were bowls not tied to conferences?

I feel like schools should go down to Miami (or wherever the bowl game is held) and try to sell the tickets to locals below face value to recover some of the losses. Also, they should have the cheerleaders sell them.

Is it stupid to suggest that the revenue-sharing ought be reformed so that teams cover their expenses from the payout? i.e. make it a profit-sharing system and not revenue-sharing

I'm willing to bet that much of the losses on bowls from major conference schools are likely horse shite numbers created by bean counters to use for tax purposes. Kinda like how during the NBA lockout team owners who own their arenas claim arena rental fees as part of their expenses that led to losses all the while ignoring they were moving money from one pocket to the other.

In an abstract way (i.e. what is theoretically possible assuming everything/everyone cooperated) or concrete way (i.e. what is feasible given the current political situation)? Seems like it would be easy abstractly, just have the payout from the bowl first go to cover the participant school's expenses, and then send the rest to the conference pool for sharing. In terms of getting people to agree to it, no clue, my guess is it's not feasible but I don't know.

conferences would take a big hit. teams would buy up all the tickets they could, send all of their athletic department and full band, etc. there wouldn't be shite left to go to the conference

UCONN lost money on Fiesta Bowl vs Oklahomos, now you get paid a lot too so I don;t know that they lost a "shitload" but they definitely lost more than a little. This mandatory ticket buy just another part of the crooked corruption that is this ridiculous BCS. Read death to the BCS, the same crooked system is in place even with this new limited playoff. If people want a reason to boycott bowl games it isn't the performance of our great Tiger team as unlike our retarded fans I plan on going provided I generate enough income to finish paying the IRS for last year. However this system of payoffs and extortion is a reason.

dude, you can't be that naive I know you like the BCS because it produces a better champ than a playoff but come, it's so corrupt The Conference commissioners, AD's and Bowl officials are all in bed together. They agree to buy the tickets because they are not spending their own money, they are spending the schools money. They don't give a shite what it costs. The bowl jacks up the price because they know it will be sold regardless. They then use the money for these junkets where the bowl officials and their buddies from the schools and conferences play golf, stay at resorts and god knows what else on OPM, Other People's Money. I mean really do you really think the Chair of some bowl makes $600,000 /yr because its the free market? It's a total scam and students and maybe tax payers are getting hosed.

I don't think Florida State is going to sell their entire allotment. How many Noles fans are stoked about this game? Seriously

By far the largest expense the university incurred came from absorbed ticket sales. The university sold only 2,771 out of an allotment of 17,500 tickets, resulting in the university absorbing 14,729 tickets worth $2,924,385, the newspaper reported.
My god that is terrible.

this is way beyond "the BCS" this is the bowl system that's existed for like 3 of my lifetimes

i don't see how it's not a free market is it stilted? sure. at the end of the day the deals are made by conferences, who have to deal with the schools getting "fricked over." do you really think there are no consequences? the pac12 had an almost outright revolt that led to expansion and much better network deals. the big12 is having similar issues, but in reverse

yes, the whole Bowl systems is corrupt.
quote:
i don't see how it's not a free market
It's cronyism, there is nothing free market about it. Insiders spending other people's money. they have no risk. If they lose money going to a bowl they aren't bearing the costs.
quote:
at the end of the day the deals are made by conferences
they are making deals with their buddies to spend someone else's money. There is no way someone would spend their own money this way. A private business would never agree to those deals. I mean do the Outback people need to fly to BR or Michigan to scout teams? The whine and dine the conference commissioners and AD's with the tax exempt bowl's money.
quote:
do you really think there are no consequences
not in a normal business sense. in a free market, if a company called UConn lost money on a deal like the Fiesta Bowl, they would fire the guys that made the deal if it didn't bankrupt them, try and renegotiate something like that. They only consequences for these guys is if they do something really outrageous and caught or break the law.

i think the disruption in the conferences is a sign that teams won't just take the terms without repercussion
