Many times I think the pass is more important than the shot. What if his field goal was a wide open layup and the pass was while he was double teamed.

What if the three pointer was wide open in a spot that the assister knew he loved to shoot from? I think the assist is as important as the shot, or more.

Plenty of people have 15 point games, but we have yet to have a single player get even 7 assists in a game.

Some of that can be attributed to luck and some of it can be attributed to offensive ability (which is hard to distinguish statistically) whereas the other statistics are primarily off/def ability, hence my suggestion.
But i guess if you subtract it out like you said it normalizes it
