Was working the ER at North Monroe Hospital when I was in school one night. Had a 10 yr old shot through the chest by his grandfather come in. He was dead when we got him but we tried. Dr busted his chest open and left lung was shredded, full of blood. Saw the Dr lose it that night trying to save the kid.
Turns out his grandfather took him hunting, put him on a stand, and told him to stay there until he came to get him down. Well, the boy got cold and decided to walk to the grandpa's stand a little before dark. As he got close he saw some deer tracks and bent over looking at them and inthe process eased out into his grandpa's shooting lane. Put the cross hairs on him and shot him.
These "brush shots" or shooting at dark without 100% certainty are not cool. They are completely avoidable and let me tell you, after seeing that family that night, no deer is worth what can happen.

I can't even fathom the thought of a 'brush shot'.
What kind of colossal moron must you be to do this? If I ever even heard someone I hunted with saying they'd done that I'd never be around them with a gun again. Just sitting here thinking about it is pissing me off.

I agree completely. It has to be people that werent raised hunting and taught by their dad. I know when Ive been around people that do questionable things, its ALWAYS someone that didnt grow up hunting, yet they think they know all because they have some high dollar lease now.

I've never been hunting and I cannot fathom how someone would think a "brush shot" was a good idea. You just don't fricking do that with a gun.

Langston that little boy was also leading the youth division at Simmons Sporting Goods at the time that it happened. I was working there at the time. That was a horrible thing to happen. I remember being in talks of what should be done since the boy had placed at the end of the contest. They decided to have a plaque made for the family.

Maybe so, but from my experience its a stupid city boy that wants to think hes a hunter and shouldnt own a gun.

Wow, didnt know that. I know its been prob 10 yrs since and I still see him when I lay down at night sometimes. Him and his family gathered outside the ER when I left work that night. I had to clean him up for the family to come see the body. fricked up man, just fricked up.

This!
Rednecks come out with a gun in their hand and know how to use it. they have killed enough deer to not be in a hurry to shoot what ever moves.
I've posted this before but I'll tell it again. There was an article in the Feild and Stream magazine about this subject. The author was hunting with a buddy and came very close to shooting him but decided not to pull the trigger at the last second because he wasn't 100% sure on shot placement. turns out it was his buddy walking down the road to meet up with him. He said til this day he swears he saw a deer but knows it was his mind playing tricks on him.
I read this story many years ago and it has stuck with me and I've always made sure of what I am shooting at. I usually don't use a light when walking in and out of the woods but I turn it own every once in a while just incase someone is hunting in the area that I don't know about. I always wear my orange and make sure my kids wear it even on private land. There is just no excuse to shoot at something when you don't know what it is.
I could tell ya'll two pages of stories about "unloaded" guns going off and people getting shot by stupidity.
