And if ND were to start playing in the ACC or BIG10 as a conference member (read: regional games) and did not play the USC's of the world and then lost that identity and tradition, what then? Why is it so important to maintain that image with their fan base? It's because that image is associated with some $$ figure. They figure they don't have any brand appeal any more if they play in an exclusive conference.

NDs endowment is worth 7.5 billion, they are not hurting for money.

sometimes status, prestige, tradition, and identity are worth more than making a couple extra million per year on a tv contract.

Why would they no longer be able to play USC. At most it's 9 conference games, that leaves 3 OOC games. Look at their schedule again, they played 3 B1G teams and 4 ACC teams counting Pitt. Is dumping Pitt, BC and Wake for B1G teams or vice versa killing their national brand?
