Now you can say that, but what if you bought AAPL instead of MSFT. It's impossible to tell at the time what will perform better, but individual stocks offer greater chances of making big returns than index funds (and greater risk as well).

We are mixing apples and oranges in this discussion. If you think a market move is happening upward, then higher risk plays tend to get more of a bounce. If you think we are heading down, then stick with established businesses. Obviously if you think a company has a growing business then the market really doesn't mean much.
