He had a tough life though. His dad was never there and when he was, he wasnt working (except for being te school janitor for like a week) while His friend Cory was living the suburban middle class dream.
You would think that his tough life would have made him a stronger person but he couldn't deal with turner's motor cycle accident, topanga and Cory's breakup, his dead beat dad's death, he and Angela's breakup, and topanga and Cory's wedding. He hated change.

Shawn became an emotional mess but the bigger disaster was what Eric turned into. Ladies man to complete moronic dumpster fire.

While that is true and sometimes he had a legit reason to melt down, sometimes he went WAY overboard. Case in point: Cory's wedding. He frickin steps up in front of the entire church and stops the wedding, then fights Cory. An actual fight, at the wedding! Then after they talk and make up (while surprisingly no adults have intervened), he stands at the altar with Cory. Embarrassing.

I know it's just a show, but I mean you'd think people in the pews would be more outraged at what happened. They were all like "oh well, just another wedding fight. Let's let it play out"

...and he reacted like a confused teenager.

Hell, I don't blame him.

His mom ditched the family, the dad was always gone (then died), and his legal guardian just disappears in the middle of the night (Turner). The last part was a joke but you see where I'm going.

The producers needed Shawn to be the lone wolf, thoughtful, confused, rough-around-the-edges rouge character to play opposite Milquetoast Corey.

The whole premise of the show is that their friendship endures despite their lack of common personality traits.
