It was all right. I just had high expectations, and I was disapointed. There were too many loose ends, and the actions of some of the characters seemed unmotivated. I thought the robot was especially bad about this. He seemed to do things just to do them with no real ryhme or reason.

I enjoyed it
I forgave the character stagnation (pretty standard in alien movies)
I understood plot points that many here seemed confused by and relished the answers we weren't given with the understanding that this isn't a stand alone flick

First: I think it helps to like the earlier Alien movies (1 & 2) or at least know something about them to understand some of the plot.

i've read that it was not related to the other alien movies plots in any way.

it wasn't set on the same planet and the characters don't align but it absolutely is related to the original movies

the entire reason for him being there was to find an engineer for the old man so the engineer could heal him. Guess they found their engineer.

Really, the thing that annoyed me was when David put the alien spooge (or whatever that was) into the other guy's drink. How did he know to do that? How did he know that ingesting it was the way that it would be effective? How does this help him heal the old guy? If his objective was not to heal the old guy are there any other possible motives that are apparent? Anything besides just fricking shite up?

Some of the cheesy shoot first before thinking and the flight crew's willingness to sacrifice themselves, I can accept. It's a movie. The ending is fine because as someone said it isn't a stand alone and more will come. But this one point in particular just really annoyed me.

I took it as:

His ultimate goal was to heal his master. So what is the deal with this alien spooge? Can it make someone young and healthy again? I know what I'll do, I'll try it out on some doofus.

That's exactly what it was IMO. It was an experiment to see what the goo did and he had to test it on someone. I believe at one point they even reference the fact that the goal was saving the old dude and everyone was basically expendable. So with that in mind David basically had no reason not to test the sludge on someone.

This first act was great, after that this film went off the rails, very fast.
