tailgating as we know it today is a fairly recent phenemonon....when I was a student, West Stadium and South Stadium lots were a LOT larger and students didn't have to move their cars until Saturday morning!!!!
I think it's the mistique of playing at night combined with the insanity of the crowd and some of the totally improbable things that have happened over the years...
