I have read many different opinions on barrel length and am trying to decide if a 24" barrel would be to short.

24" may be too short for hunting like you're wanting to.
I have a 870 express super mag w/ 26" barrell and it's a good gun. I would rather have a 28" barrel because it fits my line of sight better though.
Buy you a kicks high flyer extra full for it for turkey, squirrels, and long range ducks. Use the modified that comes with it for everything else.
