Not sure if you were agreeing or not with my assessment based on what you wrote above. I would use your example to precisely prove the point I was trying to make. We attempted some deep balls that were unsuccessful but it allowed us to rush for 258 yards at a 4.9 ypc clip against a stout defense. Had Mett not thrown that INT (on a short route) then the game would not have been that close even without the long completions. Complete some of those long ones and it is a huge blowout, as you said.
I guess my point is that we don't necessarily have to complete the long ones to improve our offense. Of course it would be great if we did but there are benefits that come from simply stretching the field vertically on a somewhat consistent basis.
