VOTING - 100 Movies We Agree Don't Suck: 1970's Edition

I think we’re past nostalgia now. Since most of us are in our 20’s and early 30’s, we lived and grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. But much like our childhoods, that time has passed.

What happened before the 80’s? Bell bottoms. Disco. Peter, Paul and Mary. Travolta. Lots and Lots of Travolta. I kid, I kid. The 70’s saw the rise of the auteur. We saw great sports movies, the most celebrated of mid-century American films, and Trav.... Kubrick, Coppola, Leone, Peckinpah, Lucas, Bertolucci and many many more. There was sweet hair, sweat bands and high tops.

But of course, my description of the 70’s is laden with the superficial elements, those that remain for us to laugh about. There was quite a bit of uneasiness following Vietnam. Political Unrest, which seems to be common in every generation, and the early seeds of the information revolution. Interesting times. The 1970’s were a difficult time to capture on film simply because the visual elements were so prominent. Who doesn’t think of disco when they first hear about the 1970’s? Shouldn’t people be apologizing for that image?

Let’s hope our list doesn’t drown itself in the worst of the 1970’s.

Without delay, let's get down to the rules, as normal:

Ballots will be posted in this thread as a response. Please label your films 1-20, with 1 being the highest, 2 next and so forth (doesn't matter how you list them, forwards or backwards, but make sure 1 is your top film). I will let the thread sink in for a week or so, then I will lock in answers with an announcement (as in, "NO FURTHER CHANGES FROM NOW ON) I will bump this thread daily until the first list is posted, I'm sure it will take a couple of days to start getting lists in.*

ONLY FILMS RELEASED BETWEEN JANUARY 1, 1970 and DECEMEBER 31, 1979 will be considered. ALL OTHER FILMS ARE UNQUALIFIED. Check the dates of the films you include

I am also taking the list of volunteers for write-ups. You know the drill. If you love film and want to channel Stallone-when-writing-Rocky, sign up.

The whole point is to order them. I won't count ballots without 1-20. It's a ranking system that we use around here.

I'll do a couple if write ups.

Also would it be unethical to leave off a couple of movies I know will get a ton of support in order to include other movies

and I assume we will count both Godfather I and II as 1?

Oh my God!

Glad you did this before I moved on from this realm. Hope making these decisions doesn't speed up that process!

Will be giving this my earnest consideration.

Your choice. I would say yes since we want an honest ranking. If said movie in question that takes place in space (or in little italy) is ACTUALLY better than other movies on your list, it should be above them, votes or not.

We've been doing separate for the last few.

Well, I have been adhering to Baloo's standard of only voting for 1 movie per director and good guess on the movies in question

There's always one director that breaks that rule for me. Looks to be the case this time as well.

I found this to be very helpful, just enter the years 1970 to 1979. It is from the IMDB ratings and can be sorted by movie types as well.
